Male infertility can have many causes including these:

  • You may not make enough sperm or healthy sperm.
  • You may have a genetic problem like cystic fibrosis.
  • You may have a blockage in your genital tract.
  • If you have had genital infections, injury to your testicles, or early or late puberty.

Treatment depends on what is causing your infertility.

Treatments may include artificial insemination, medicines, and surgery.

In the case that male infertility is suspected, a semen analysis is performed. This test will evaluate the health of your sperm. A blood test may also be performed to check your level of testosterone and other male hormones.

Further tests may be done to help identify the cause of your infertility, including:

  • Scrotal ultrasound
  • Transrectal ultrasound
  • Hormone testing
  • Post-ejaculation urinalysis
  • Testicular biopsy
  • Specialised sperm function tests
